A Canvas Story

“Light in the Canopy”

36x36 oil on gallery-wrapped canvas

There are certain pieces that seem to create their own life during the time they're in your possession. Case in point, I bought a 36”x36” gallery-wrapped canvas from Blick about a dozen years ago with the intent to start painting more frequently. As usual, it was rather ridiculous of me to buy such a large surface; I basically guaranteed that I was biting off more than I could chew at the time. My job didn’t leave me with much time to devote to it, and I was in a creative dry spell. Hell, I wasn’t even sure if the acrylics I had were still usable.

It sat for at least a year, still wrapped in the plastic packaging it came in before I finally decided to start working on it. I dove in without a plan (imagine that!) and just began depositing purples, yellows and other random colors with a palette knife one morning as I drank my coffee before going to work. Repeated this impromptu routine for a couple of more days and titled the abstract piece “Before Breakfast” - how original.

“Before Breakfast”

The original painting in acrylic posted June 13, 2010.
